Bhutto supporters pin hopes on son and heir
Excerpt:
"There is an eerie quiet at Benazir Bhutto's Karachi home-cum-campaign headquarters where grief is giving way to hope that her legacy will live on through her son and heir.
Crowned her political successor on Sunday, Bhutto's 19-year-old son Bilawal will not be eligible to run for parliament for another six years, but banker and party stalwart Haseeb Ala can wait.
"Truly, Benazir left a great vacuum," said Ala, 48, sitting under an awning outside the towering fortress-like walls of the Karachi home Bhutto named after her only son.
"But the Bhutto name is a legacy. It's a binding force, because of their sacrifice. He is the future.""

"Days before the Iowa caucuses, a prominent Hillary Clinton supporter criticized the state's privileged role in the presidential nominating process, forcing her campaign to declare she did not agree.
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland told The Columbus Dispatch it "makes no sense" to grant Iowa the right to hold the first presidential contest."

Photo Surfaces Of Obama With Indicted Chicago Lobbyist
Excerpt:
"And one Chicago reader who isn't associated with a political campaign last week sent along something I don't think has ever been public before: this undated photograph of Obama and the indicted lobbyist, fixer, and former patron, Tony Rezko.
The L.A. Times had a good piece on these elements of Obama's past a couple of months ago, describing the compromises that come with Chicago politics, Obama's relationships with lobbyists at the time, and his courting of old-school fixers. To the occasional frustration of some Chicago liberals, he's also still making endorsements on the Daley machine side of Chicago politics, something Eric Zorn flagged long ago. That Chicago machine, also the political base of his chief advisor, David Axelrod, has been a solid bloc of support behind his presidential campaign.
Still, that pragmatism isn't something he advertises."

The New York Times - Under Attack, Drug Maker Turned to Giuliani for Help
Excerpt:
"In 2002, the drug maker, Purdue Pharma of Stamford, Conn., hired Mr. Giuliani and his consulting firm, Giuliani Partners, to help stem the controversy about OxyContin. Among Mr. Giuliani’s missions was the job of convincing public officials that they could trust Purdue because they could trust him.
So it was no small success when, after the call, Mr. Brownlee did what many people might have done when confronted with such celebrity: He went out and bought a copy of Mr. Giuliani’s book, “Leadership.”
“I wanted to be prepared for my meetings with him,” Mr. Brownlee said in a recent interview.
Over the past few weeks, Mr. Giuliani’s consulting business has received increasing scrutiny, at times forcing him to defend his business as he campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination.
But his work for Purdue, the company’s first and longest-running client, provides a window into how he used his standing as an eminent lawyer, a Republican insider and a national celebrity to aid a controversial client and build a business fortune."

Arianna Huffington: Benazir Bhutto: From the Oxford Union to her Last Rally in Rawalpindi
Excerpt:
"The world is debating the political fallout from Benazir Bhutto's assassination -- from fear of chaos in Pakistan to the impact of her death in Iowa. But I want to write about the young woman I met in England before she became a player on the world stage. She was at Oxford. I was at Cambridge. And by a strange coincidence I became president of the Cambridge Union and she became president of the Oxford Union. The anomaly of two foreign women heading the two unions meant that we ended up debating each other around England. And in the years that followed, I saw her at the height of her power as the first prime minister in the Muslim world, and at her lowest moment -- in exile, her husband in jail, separated from her children. And through it all she radiated an unmistakable fearlessness and grace."

"Romney's thrown everything but the kitchen sink," said Huckabee senior adviser Charmaine Yoest. "We expect the kitchen sink next week."
Romney, who is on a "Strong America" bus tour across Iowa this weekend, has said he is only pointing out differences, such as Huckabee's past support of scholarships for children of illegal immigrants. The former Massachusetts governor, who recently lost his Iowa lead to Huckabee, also has criticized the immigration views of John McCain and Rudy Giuliani."

"I was looking forward to a quiet family holiday in New York this summer with my three children, our dog Maxmillian and my husband, who is being treated for a heart condition that developed while he was a political prisoner in Pakistan from 1996 to 2004. I thought we would go to the theatre and spend time walking in Central Park, as well meeting up with friends for nice, long chatty dinners. But in this surprisingly momentous summer of 2007, our quiet family vacation disappeared as we found ourselves caught up in the media attention on my country Pakistan, and its fast changing political situation."

Giuliani ad links World War II, 9/11
Alex: How long is Giuliani going to milk for political purposes the lives of deceased Americans (that's my view). I lived in and around NYC almost the entire time Giuliani was Mayor. In my opinion (don't get me started) his negatives far far outweighed his positives.
Well, we as a nation have most recently elected President Bush (who some feel is a warmonger) for the last two terms, so we'll see what we as a nation do next
Excerpt:
"Called "Freedom," the 60-second spot mixes video of Giuliani speaking and then speaking over images of American soldiers and homefront workers during the war and then firefighters at Ground Zero in New York. One is the famous photo of Marines planting the US flag on Iwo Jima and another of the flag raised over the rubble of the World Trade Center. In stump speeches, he has directly linked those two events."

World leaders condemn Bhutto assassination
World leaders condemn Bhutto assassination
Alex: Condemning this by world leaders, while not a bad thing, is largely ceremonial and even PR in regard to effect (i.e. there is no real effect).
I am a big believer in the rule of law. I don't believe in vengeance ("an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind") but I do very much believe in accountability. All persons of decency should speak out to insure that all others that might be responsible for this crime be apprehended and put behind bars. It is important that a full but appropriate response be found if we wish to create the type of world in which we really wish to live.

King said George Romney didn't march
King said George Romney didn't march
Excerpt:
"So, for evidence of a principled stand he never took, Romney appropriated his father's principles. But, unlike King himself, Romney was not satisfied with what George Romney actually did. He inflated it, placing his father into the iconic position of marching alongside the civil rights leader.
He didn't just use imprecise language, as his campaign is now spinning it. His language — in at least three different nationally televised instances, including this past Sunday's Meet the Press with Tim Russert — was precise enough: he had direct, personal first-hand knowledge that his father had marched with Dr. King."

"One of the most highly anticipated political telefilms being released next year is “Recount,” a fast-paced depiction of the behind-the-scenes drama that took place in Florida during the disputed 2000 Gore-Bush election....
Centering primarily on Democratic operatives Ron Klain (Kevin Spacey) and Michael Whouley (Denis Leary), “Recount” also shows the moves and countermoves orchestrated by Republican icon James Baker III (Tom Wilkinson) and Bush/Cheney attorney Ben Ginsberg (Bob Babalan).
Both George W. Bush and Al Gore are also depicted in the film, primarily through news footage and some stand-ins seen from behind or other obscured angles.
Strong went to great lengths to ensure accuracy, combing over several books, including Jeffrey Toobin’s “Too Close to Call” and the Washington Post political staff’s “Deadlock: The Inside Story of America’s Closest Election,” among others.

He is already surging in Florida, trailing the leader Giuliani by four percentage points in a recent Strategic Vision poll, even though he has campaigned primarily elsewhere. And while the former Baptist minister finds himself on top of most polls in Iowa, it is anything but a secure position. The Real Clear Politics average has him at 29.2 percent to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's 25.5 percent. Moreover, in New Hampshire, a place where he could directly capitalize on his strong showing in Iowa, there is ground to be gained. "The Des Moines Register dinged Mr. Edwards last month with the headline “Edwards Is Late, Students Wait.” The article noted that he had not only been late for that high school gathering but also kept supporters waiting for 45 minutes in a “cold, damp wind” at an event a week earlier, tardiness that was explained by a campaign aide who said the candidate had been spending time with his parents, who were traveling with him.
Mr. Edwards has been ribbed about his habit in public, sometimes by people whose endorsement he is studiously courting. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, he was scheduled to appear in New Hampshire alongside a Democratic congresswoman from the state, Carol Shea-Porter. Giuliani Snuck Out 2,000 Boxes From City Hall
Excerpt:
"Under an unprecedented agreement that didn't become public until after he left office, Giuliani secreted out of City Hall the written, photographic and electronic record of his eight years in office _ more than 2,000 boxes.
The mayor made famous _ and very wealthy _ in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks has long described his City Hall as an open book.
In a Republican presidential candidates' debate last week, Giuliani asserted: "My government in New York City was so transparent that they knew every single thing I did almost every time I did it. ... I can't think of a public figure that's had a more transparent life than I've had.""
